Summary

Jettie S. Tisdale School is a PK–8 elementary and middle school in Bridgeport, CT, serving 547 students in the Bridgeport School District, which ranks near the bottom of Connecticut's 153 districts. Tisdale's most recent ranking places it 463rd out of 491 schools statewide — the 6th percentile, with zero stars. The school serves an overwhelmingly low-income population, with 92.1% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, and chronic absenteeism is a serious concern: 34.9% of students were chronically absent in 2025–2026, more than double the state rate of 16.4%.

Tisdale actually spends more per pupil ($16,267) than most neighbors and enjoys a favorable student-teacher ratio of 11.8, yet academic outcomes remain weak overall. There are bright spots: the school consistently outperforms the district in 8th grade math (27.1% proficiency vs. 17.0% districtwide in 2025–2026) and has topped district averages in several early-grade subjects. Middle-grade results, however, are uneven — 7th grade math proficiency was just 8.3% in 2024–2025, far below the district's 18.4%. The contrast with nearby High Horizons Magnet School is striking: High Horizons spends less per pupil ($11,359), has larger classes, yet posts stronger results in several subjects and far lower absenteeism (17.7% vs. 34.9%). Stratford's Franklin School and Johnson House Elementary School, less than 1.3 miles away, also outperform Tisdale in early-grade math and science. Still, Tisdale is not the weakest school in its neighborhood — it beats Luis Munoz Marin School, Barnum School, and Waltersville School in several subjects, and has better attendance than Waltersville, Paul Laurence Dunbar School, and Barnum.

The big takeaway is that higher spending and smaller classes don't guarantee stronger results. Tisdale's trajectory is unstable — it reached the 14th percentile in 2022–2023 before dropping back to the 6th percentile — and chronic absenteeism has shown no sustained improvement. For parents, the encouraging news is that pockets of success, particularly in 8th grade math, demonstrate that effective instruction exists in the building and could be expanded to more grades and subjects.
