Putnam School District

The Putnam School District serves 1,164 students across three schools — Putnam Elementary School (PK–4), Putnam Middle School (5–8), and Putnam High School (9–12) — in a district ranked 135 of 153 Connecticut districts, with about 58% of students qualifying for free/reduced-price lunch.

Among the three schools, Putnam Middle School has the strongest overall ranking (34th percentile, 2 stars) and the lowest poverty rate at 54.11%. It posts bright spots in 7th-grade ELA (49% proficient) and math (34.7%), but struggles with 5th-grade math (16.4%) and 8th-grade math (12.9% — both roughly 29 points below state averages). Putnam Elementary School has the best attendance (17.0% chronic absenteeism, the only school below the district average) and posts moderate 3rd-grade math scores (44.3% proficient) despite the district's highest poverty rate. Putnam High School graduates 90.3% of students — above the district rate and near the state average — yet SAT math proficiency is just 15.3%, less than half the state rate, despite the highest per-student spending ($18,448) and lowest student-teacher ratio (9.5:1).

Chronic absenteeism climbs with grade level (17.0% elementary, 18.9% middle, 22.9% high — all above the state's 16.4%). The most striking finding is the math drop when students transition to middle school: the cohort with 40.5% math proficiency in 4th grade fell to 16.4% as 5th graders, a 24-point decline. The current 8th-grade class also saw math fall from 23.8% to 12.9% in one year. On a positive note, one cohort improved significantly between 6th and 7th grade in both ELA (45.0% to 49.0%) and math (27.7% to 34.7%), showing that growth is achievable. The biggest opportunities lie in supporting the elementary-to-middle transition, addressing middle-school math gaps, and reducing high-school absenteeism.
