Bolton School District

The Bolton School District serves roughly 685 students in the small Connecticut town of Bolton through just two schools — Bolton Center School, a PK–8 school with 473 students, and Bolton High School, a 9–12 school with 212 students. The district ranks in the 63rd percentile statewide, but that figure understates the strength of its individual schools, both rated higher than the district as a whole.

Bolton Center School is the district's academic standout for growth and attendance. Its state ranking jumped from the 63rd to the 79th percentile in a year, earning a 4-star rating. Chronic absenteeism sits at just 4.6%, roughly a quarter of the state average of 16.4%. Test scores top state proficiency across nearly every grade and subject, with strong science results — 69.2% proficient in 5th grade and 76.5% in 8th grade. The one relative weak spot is 7th grade math at 47.1% proficient, still above the state average but far below other grade levels. A student–teacher ratio of 10.8 supports the PK–8 model, where students spend nine years in one building.

Bolton High School is a small, high-achieving school with a 97.9% graduation rate, well above the 91.2% state average. It was recently ranked 20th of 145 high schools statewide (86th percentile), and its SAT ELA proficiency of 67.4% remains 12 points above the state average, despite dropping from 76.6% the prior year. The high school invests far more per student — $23,195 versus $16,338 at Bolton Center School — supporting a very low student–teacher ratio of 7.4. The main caution is chronic absenteeism, which jumps to 11.3%, more than double the elementary rate, though still below the state average. For parents, Bolton offers a stable elementary experience and an intensive, personalized high school environment in a uniquely configured district.
