Summary

Caliche Elementary School is a small, rural PK–6 school in Iliff, Colorado, serving 139 students and one of two elementary schools within School District No. Re-1 Valley, a district ranked in the bottom half of Colorado. Despite serving a student body where nearly half of students (48.9%) qualify for free/reduced lunch, Caliche has become the stronger academic performer in its district, outpacing Campbell Elementary School on every recent measure. Its ELA proficiency of 38.2% beats Campbell's 33.4%, and its math proficiency of 25.0% also exceeds Campbell's 22.9%. Caliche also benefits from a more favorable student-teacher ratio of 13.3 compared to Campbell's 17.7.

Caliche has made notable progress in recent years. Chronic absenteeism dropped from 25.6% in 2023–2024 to 17.5% in 2024–2025, well below the state's 28.4% rate. The school also cut its student-teacher ratio from 20.7 to 13.3 over the same period. Caliche's ELA performance is especially impressive given its poverty level — it exceeds Fleming Elementary School's ELA proficiency (38.2% vs. 27.9%) even though Fleming has less than half the free/reduced lunch rate. However, math remains a clear weakness: only 25% of students are proficient in math, compared to 37.3% statewide, and 6th-grade math proficiency sits at just 19%. Nearby Peetz Elementary School, located about 12.6 miles away, demonstrates what's possible, with 48.9% math proficiency in School District No. Re-5 Plateau, a district ranked at the 99th percentile.

Caliche's state ranking has been volatile, swinging from the 9th percentile in 2023–2024 to the 55th percentile in 2024–2025 and settling at the 33rd percentile in 2025–2026. The collapse in 2023–2024 lined up with the school's lowest recorded test scores, but since then, ELA proficiency has nearly doubled (19.7% to 38.2%) and math has improved (18.2% to 25.0%). These gains, combined with better attendance and smaller class sizes, point to a school that may be turning the corner. The bottom line: Caliche has clear strengths in literacy and attendance, punching above its weight given its poverty rate, but persistent math struggles — particularly in upper grades — will require continued focus for the school to achieve consistent, above-average performance.
