Sandrock Elementary

Public Grades K-5
Summary

Sandrock Elementary is a K-5 school in Craig, Colorado, serving 299 students in the Moffat County School District RE: No. 1. It is the largest of the nearby elementary schools, with a student-teacher ratio of 11.7:1. The school serves a student population with significantly higher economic need than its neighbors — 70.2% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch, compared to 57.9% at Sunset Elementary, 52.8% at Ridgeview Elementary, and 24.1% at Hayden Valley Elementary. Sandrock's most recent state ranking places it at the 39th percentile (2 stars), a solid middle-of-the-pack performance given the challenges its students face.

Academically, the picture is mixed. Sandrock's brightest spot is 3rd-grade reading: 37.5% of students are proficient, above the district average of 36.3% and close to the state's 42.0%. However, this early strength does not appear to carry through — all-grades ELA proficiency is 25.2%, below Sunset's 36.3% and Hayden Valley's 31.3%. In 5th-grade science, Sandrock (31.0%) outperforms Hayden Valley (25.0%) but trails Sunset (37.5%). 3rd-grade math (30.4%) falls below both district (37.0%) and state (41.2%) averages. Chronic absenteeism is also a concern at 29.1% — higher than Sunset (21.7%), Hayden Valley (18.4%), and Ridgeview (15.7%).

The most encouraging trend is long-term improvement. Sandrock has climbed from the 3rd percentile in 2015-2016 to the 39th percentile today, a meaningful gain made while poverty rates rose sharply. That said, Sunset Elementary, located just 0.67 miles away, is outperforming Sandrock in several areas while serving a less disadvantaged population. Attendance and sustaining early literacy gains through 5th grade appear to be the school's biggest levers for continued progress.
