Summary

La Junta Intermediate School serves 397 students in grades 3 through 6 in La Junta, Colorado, and is part of the East Otero School District No. R1. The school is the only tested elementary school in a district ranked 114th out of 115 Colorado districts, and it currently holds a 1-star rating from the state. Academically, La Junta Intermediate is well below statewide averages, with 24% of students proficient in English Language Arts versus 44.7% statewide, and 11.3% proficient in math versus 37.3% statewide. The school serves a high-need population, with 78.3% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

Math is the school's most serious challenge. The 11.3% math proficiency rate is the lowest among comparable nearby schools with reported scores: Rocky Ford Elementary School posts 22.7%, Las Animas Elementary School posts 41.7%, and Swink Elementary School posts 50.0%. Scores also decline as students progress through the grades. In 3rd grade, 17.3% of students are proficient in math, but by 5th grade that number falls to just 8.2%. English Language Arts proficiency similarly drops from 30.3% in 3rd grade to 20.6% in 5th grade. Chronic absenteeism, at 28.1%, is close to the state average of 28.4% and far better than the district rate of 39.0%, though successful neighboring schools like Las Animas Elementary School (19.4%) and Swink Elementary School (21.1%) have meaningfully lower rates.

The school does outperform its own district averages — district ELA proficiency is 18.3% and district math is just 8.5% — and there are signs of progress. ELA proficiency has climbed from 18.8% in 2022–2023 to 24.0% in 2025–2026, while math has barely moved. Notably, high poverty alone does not explain the results. Las Animas Elementary School, with an even higher poverty rate of 82.3% and larger class sizes, achieves 57.1% ELA and 41.7% math proficiency. Rocky Ford Elementary School, with 84.6% free/reduced lunch eligibility, also outperforms La Junta in both subjects. La Junta Intermediate School is a school making modest gains in reading and science, but math proficiency remains in single digits by 5th grade — a clear area of focus for the district and school leadership.
