Summary

Jefferson County Open Elementary School is a small PK-6 school in Lakewood, Colorado, serving about 236 students within the Jefferson County School District No. R-1, a district that ranks among the top 25 in the state and earns 4 stars. The school itself holds a mid-pack position, ranking 484th out of 943 Colorado elementary schools at the 49th percentile. That middling ranking has been consistent over the past several years, though the school performed better a decade ago.

Where this school really stands out is attendance. Its chronic absenteeism rate of 19.4% is well below the district average of 26.6% and the state average of 28.4%—and dramatically better than several nearby schools. Lumberg Elementary School has a 52.8% chronic absenteeism rate, Eiber Elementary School is at 56.8%, and Rose Stein International Elementary sits at 42.6%. Only Dennison Elementary School, a top-ranked neighbor, has a better attendance record. Academically, Jefferson County Open outperforms most nearby schools in reading and math, including South Lakewood Elementary School, Slater Elementary School, and Edgewater Elementary School.

The school's biggest academic strength is 6th grade reading, where 62.5% of students are proficient—well above the district (49.4%) and state (41.6%). Math has also improved steadily, climbing from 16.5% proficiency in 2022-2023 to 33.6% in 2025-2026, though it still trails the state average. Science and 5th grade math remain weak spots, and with a poverty rate of 33.1%—far lower than many nearby schools—families might expect stronger results than the school currently delivers. Still, with strong attendance, stable reading scores, and a clear upward trend in math, Jefferson County Open is a solidly average school that outperforms most of its immediate neighbors.

Open Quote I have been incredibly impressed with the dedication, professionalism, and commitment of the staff at the Open School. My son is in the elementary program and those teachers are top-notch! You can find them presenting at conferences nation wide! When considering schools for our son, I observed the classrooms of numerous (13) schools, from gifted programs to Montessori, across three districts, and did not see anything that even compared to the experience provided each student at the Jeffco Open School. Each student was considered as if he/she was the teachers sole student! Of course, I considered test scores. When looking further into performance, I was delighted to see the high percentage of students (in the 90%) that went on to attend 4 year universities. Further, many students play sports on the teams of neighboring high schools (Lake for example). If I had to sum up the Open School, so far it has been; academic achievement coupled with love of learning (as a life-long interest), personal responsibility and self-directedness. The older students mentor the younger students, they are starting a huge garden program, and the experience is unmatched. What an amazing place to grow up (and be a parent of a student)!
