Summary

Jefferson County Open Secondary is a small public school in Lakewood, CO, serving 315 students in grades 7–12 within the Jefferson County School District R-1. The school's biggest academic strength is literacy: 61.3% of students are proficient in English Language Arts, well above the district's 53.7% and state's 44.7%, and 66% of 11th graders are proficient in SAT Reading & Writing. This is particularly striking when compared with other area schools serving similar populations. Alameda International Junior/Senior High School posted just 9.6% ELA proficiency, while Jefferson Junior/Senior High School had 13.2% and Brady Exploration School had only 23% SAT Reading/Writing proficiency. In fact, Jefferson County Open Secondary nearly matches Lakewood High School, one of the area's top comprehensive schools, in reading.

Math is a clear weak spot, however. Chronic absenteeism sits at 36.0%, above the district rate of 26.6%, but is considerably better than many peer schools—North High School Engagement Center is at 88.2% and New America School at 85.3%. The school has shown particular strength with low-income students, ranking in the 93rd percentile statewide in 2023-24. Over the past decade, Jefferson County Open Secondary has moved from the 33rd percentile to the 61st percentile in overall school performance, with strong science scores and a clearly positive trajectory—an alternative school that avoids the negative outcomes often seen in similar programs nearby.
