Summary

Jefferson Junior/Senior High School in Edgewater, CO, serves 601 students in grades 7–12 and is part of the Jefferson County School District No. R-1, a top-quartile district overall — yet the school itself ranks in the bottom 1% of Colorado high schools (335th of 338) with a 0-star rating. This is a school in crisis: academic proficiency is critically low across every subject and grade level, with only 6% of students proficient in math, 13.2% in English language arts, and 20% of 11th graders meeting SAT reading/writing benchmarks. These numbers are roughly a quarter to a fifth of district averages, and dramatically below nearby schools like Wheat Ridge High School and Lakewood High School, which post SAT reading proficiency above 66%.

Chronic absenteeism is a severe problem — 58.7% of students miss enough school to be considered chronically absent, more than double the district rate of 26.6%. Only alternative/engagement schools like Brady Exploration School, New America School, and AUL Denver have higher absenteeism rates. The graduation rate of 77.5% is below the district's 86.7%, though it is far better than those same alternative schools, some of which graduate fewer than 10% of students. The school also stands out because it is surrounded by same-district schools serving similar populations that perform dramatically better: Jefferson County Open Secondary, just 1.3 miles away, has ELA proficiency of 61.3% versus Jefferson's 13.2%, and Career Education Center Early College achieves a 97.1% graduation rate with a similar high-poverty population.

The data show the problems start early — 7th-grade math proficiency is just 4.8% and 8th-grade ELA is 10.1% — meaning students arrive in high school already several grade levels behind. The student-teacher ratio of 13.6 is actually lower than at nearby schools, so class size is not the primary issue. On the positive side, the dropout rate has declined to 1.7%, below the state average, and the school is keeping students enrolled. However, students who stay are not learning at grade level. The combination of severe absenteeism, single-digit math proficiency, and bottom-tier rankings across all student subgroups points to a school in urgent need of comprehensive intervention, starting with attendance and math instruction.

Open Quote would give this HS 0/5 stars if possible. schooldigger has this spot on, poor in academics; even worse in classroom etiquette from visit as guest teacher. A disgrace to all of the other fine schools within the Jeffco district in state of CO. Avoid sending your child here if at all possible. Close Quote
