Haxtun Junior/Senior High School

Haxtun Junior/Senior High School is a small rural secondary school in northeastern Colorado serving 142 students in grades 7–12 as part of Haxtun School District No. Re-2J. The school has received 2-star ratings in recent years, placing around the 40th percentile statewide — a notable decline from its 4-star ranking in the early 2010s when it ranked in the 80th percentile.

The school's biggest strengths lie in keeping students engaged and on track. The graduation rate was 96.2% in 2022–23, the dropout rate was 0.0%, and chronic absenteeism was just 12.1% in 2024–25 — less than half the state average of 28.4%. These persistence metrics far exceed nearby Holyoke Alternative School, which has a 66.7% graduation rate. Reading and writing is also a relative bright spot, with SAT Reading/Writing proficiency reaching 70% in 2024–25 (above the state's 62%) and PSAT9 Reading/Writing hitting 85% in 2025–26. The one exception is 8th-grade science, where proficiency reached 47.4% in 2024–25 — well above the state's 36.4% — though 11th-grade science lagged at just 14.7%.

Mathematics is the school's clearest challenge. CMAS math proficiency was just 15.6% in 2025–26, far below the state's 34–37% range. The contrast with nearby Fleming High School, just 11 miles away, is striking: Fleming achieved 60.7% math proficiency with nearly identical poverty levels. Haxtun performs roughly on par with Holyoke Senior High School academically, despite serving a less economically disadvantaged population. With only 20–25 students per grade, proficiency rates swing sharply from year to year, so single-year results should be interpreted cautiously.
