Summary

Crystal River Elementary School is a traditional public school in Carbondale, Colorado, serving 445 students in grades PK through 4 as part of the Roaring Fork School District No. Re-1, and it is showing clear signs of momentum after several years of below-average performance. In 2025-26, math proficiency jumped from 21.7% to 32.1% and English Language Arts (ELA) rose from 26.7% to 33.3%, lifting the school's state rank by 136 places to the 37th percentile — the largest single-year improvement among nearby schools. With a favorable student-teacher ratio of 12.3:1 and 40.9% of students eligible for free/reduced lunch, the school sits in the middle of the district in terms of economic disadvantage.

One of CRES's standout strengths is attendance. Its chronic absenteeism rate of 18.2% is well below the district average of 25.8% and the state average of 28.4%, and it improved from 22.7% the prior year. Among nearby schools, only Carbondale Community Charter School (13.9%) has a lower rate. Another interesting pattern is the grade-level gap: 4th graders dramatically outperform 3rd graders in both ELA (42.9% vs 23.1%) and math (36.9% vs 26.9%), suggesting that students may experience significant academic growth during 3rd grade or that the current 4th-grade cohort is unusually strong.

Within two miles, CRES faces competition from two charter schools. Carbondale Community Charter School outperforms CRES significantly (ELA 54.3%, Math 42.6%), while Ross Montessori School has similar math proficiency (32.1%) and higher ELA (44.1%) but a much higher chronic absenteeism rate (41.6%). CRES's larger enrollment means it serves a broader cross-section of the Carbondale community. While the school still trails several district peers and the state average, the combination of improving test scores, low absenteeism, and moderate class sizes suggests recent school-wide initiatives may be taking effect — though sustained attention to historically underserved subgroups will be critical to maintaining this momentum.

Open Quote CRES has dedicated faculty and administrators, who always took time (even on their weekends in some cases!) to talk about my son's education. The school has music, art and PE -- The school does not just offer it; the school is committed to ensuring all children participate. My son is moving on to middle school now, and we are sad to say goodbye to such a great school but also feel prepared and excited about moving on! Close Quote
