Summary

Summit Academy is a small public school in School District No. 1 serving 236 students in grades 6–12, and it faces significant challenges: nearly 92% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, one of the highest poverty rates in the area. The school ranks in the bottom tier of Colorado high schools — 307th out of 338 in 2025–26, placing it in the 9th percentile with a 0-star rating. Its graduation, dropout, chronic absenteeism, and test proficiency rates all trail district and state averages by wide margins.

For parents, the most urgent concern is chronic absenteeism. More than two-thirds of students were chronically absent in 2024–25, up sharply from 51% the previous year, compared to 38.1% districtwide and 28.4% statewide. The graduation rate of 56% is far below the district's 81.9% and the state's 85.6%, and it lags well behind nearby schools like Rocky Mountain Prep SMART (94.6%), DSST: College View (89.8%), and Alameda International (85.5%). Test proficiency is also very low: on CMAS, only 10.9% of students were proficient in English language arts and 14.1% in math, versus 35–45% district and state averages. SAT reading/writing proficiency was 18%, compared to 43% at Rocky Mountain Prep SMART and 55% at DSST: College View.

There are a few bright spots worth noting. The school earns some credit for its effectiveness with Hispanic students (19th percentile, up from 7th) and low-income students (17th percentile). Its student-teacher ratio of 12.1:1 is also lower than many nearby schools, suggesting smaller class sizes. However, the comparison with Rocky Mountain Prep SMART is striking: both schools serve nearly identical poverty levels and are only two miles apart, yet RMP SMART graduates 94.6% of students while Summit Academy graduates 56%. This shows that high poverty does not have to dictate low outcomes. Summit Academy's statewide percentile has improved from 1st to 9th since 2023–24, but with only 236 students, year-to-year swings can be dramatic, and outcomes remain far below most Denver comprehensive high schools.
