Summary

Girls Athletic Leadership School Middle School (GALS) is a small, mission-driven girls' middle school in Denver serving 223 students in grades 6–8. For 2025–2026, it ranks 78th out of 469 Colorado middle schools — the 83rd percentile with a 4-star rating — despite its home district, School District No. 1, ranking only 71st of 115 districts with 2 stars. On CMAS assessments, 69.8% of GALS students are proficient in English Language Arts, 48.1% in math, and 55.9% in 8th-grade science — all far exceeding district and state averages.

The contrast with nearby schools is striking. Just 0.23 miles away, West Middle School ranks 446th out of 469 schools, posting just 13.9% ELA and 5.6% math proficiency, while GALS reaches 69.8% and 48.1%. Among the ten closest middle schools, GALS trails only Morey Middle School (ranked 11th statewide) and DSST: Cedar Middle School (ranked 49th). GALS' ELA scores are more than double those of most nearby schools, and its math scores exceed every neighboring school except Morey and DSST: Cedar. Improvement has been steady: GALS climbed from the 54th percentile in 2021–2022 to the 83rd percentile today, with math proficiency nearly doubling from 26.1% to 48.1% and ELA rising from 53.9% to 69.8%.

GALS also reports stronger attendance and lower dropout rates than its district: chronic absenteeism is 27.9% vs. 38.1% districtwide, and the dropout rate is 1.1% vs. 3.2%. The school serves a more economically advantaged population than most neighbors, with 30.9% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch compared to 95.7% at West Middle. Two areas offer room for growth: 6th-grade math proficiency (31.2%) is the single score where GALS falls below the state average, and the school's low-income and Gifted and Talented students both rank near the 52nd percentile statewide. For families seeking a girls-focused school with strong academics and steady momentum, GALS is a compelling choice.

The Girls Athletic Leadership School is tremendous place! Middle school is such a pivot point for girls, and GALS provides their students with everything they need to succeed, to build solid friendship, and to value their individuality. The academics are rigorous, but the GALS series is the secret sauce. It's a 3-year course (which they attend daily) designed to make students "more aware of their individual and community identity, the skills to navigate through challenges and decisions successfully, and empowerment to drive them." Choosing GALS for our daughter was one of the best decisions we've ever made! And their transition to remote learning has been thoughtful and seamless. We are so thankful to be part of this community! Close Quote
