Summary

Rocky Mountain Prep Federal is a middle school in Denver's School District No. 1 serving 376 students in grades 6–8, located in a high-poverty area where 88 percent of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school currently ranks 427 out of 469 Colorado middle schools, placing it in the 9th percentile statewide with a 0-star rating — well below the district, which itself sits in the 38th percentile of Colorado districts.

Academic proficiency is far below district and state averages across every subject. Only 18.7 percent of students meet ELA expectations, compared to 42.5 percent in the district and 44.7 percent statewide; math proficiency is 15.1 percent versus 35.0 percent district and 37.3 percent statewide. The most striking result is 8th-grade science: just 3.9 percent proficient, the lowest among nearby middle schools. Math scores also decline sharply as students advance, falling from 22.0 percent proficiency in 6th grade to just 8.7 percent in 8th grade. By contrast, Grant Beacon Middle School, just over two miles away, achieves 30.5 percent science proficiency and ranks in the 60th percentile statewide — showing that a nearby school with a majority low-income student body can produce far stronger results.

Chronic absenteeism is a serious concern, jumping from 32.8 percent to 45.9 percent in a single year, meaning nearly half the student body is missing enough school to be considered chronically absent. The student-teacher ratio also rose sharply from 10.2 to 15.4, while many nearby schools maintain smaller ratios. Subgroup effectiveness rankings are very low, with male students in the 7th percentile statewide and female students in the 12th percentile. The school's decline has been steady over the past decade, dropping from the 50th percentile in 2015-2016 to the bottom decile today. While dropout rates were low in earlier reporting years, the combination of low proficiency, steep math decline, rising absenteeism, and larger class sizes makes this one of the lowest-performing middle schools in Denver.

The school offers a thorough academic experience to students who otherwise may not have that opportunity in their neighboring school. He comes home telling us about how interesting math was for the day, or about how he is using hands-on activities in science class.
