Summary:

The city of Akron, Colorado, is served by two public schools — Akron Elementary School (grades PK–8, 301 students) and Akron High School (grades 9–12, 110 students) — both part of Akron School District No. R-1, which currently ranks 74th out of 115 Colorado districts with a 2-star rating.

Akron High School is the stronger performer on several key measures. It graduates 88.5% of its students, above the state rate of 85.6%, and its chronic absenteeism rate of 15.0% is well below the state average of 28.4%. Tenth graders actually outperformed the state in PSAT10 reading and writing, with 70% proficiency versus 65% statewide. However, math is a significant concern: only 19% of 11th graders scored proficient on SAT math versus 32% statewide, and just 13% of 10th graders scored proficient on PSAT10 math compared to 39% statewide. Akron Elementary School serves a majority low-income population, with 53.49% of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch. Its CMAS proficiency rates are well below state averages in both English language arts and math, and scores dropped sharply in 2025–26: ELA proficiency fell from 35.7% to 21.5%, while math fell from 28.6% to 16.9%.

Both schools offer favorable student–teacher ratios (11.7:1 at the elementary and 9.9:1 at the high school), and chronic absenteeism is not the primary issue — both schools are below the state average. Yet Akron High School's state ranking percentile has slipped from 50th in 2023–24 to 37th in 2025–26, with its star rating dropping from 3 to 2 stars. Math is clearly the district-wide academic weakness, while reading and writing are relative strengths, particularly at the high school. The sharp decline in elementary test scores in 2025–26 is a trend that warrants closer investigation.
