Summary:

ZIP code 94044 has nine schools: six elementary schools, one middle school and two high schools, serving families across a mix of grade spans. Eight schools have numerical 2025–2026 proficiency results; Pacifica Independent Home Study’s ELA and math results are suppressed and cannot be compared. The area’s eight-school averages are 56% in ELA, 49% in math and 49% in science, compared with state benchmarks of 49%, 38% and 36%, respectively. Most importantly, all eight scored schools exceed state benchmarks in math and science, but ELA results are more uneven, with one school below the state benchmark.

Vallemar Elementary is the strongest all-around standout: it leads math at 69% and science at 65%, ahead of the next-highest school in each subject by 15 and 10 points. Oceana High leads ELA at 64%, just ahead of Terra Nova High at 63%. At the other end, Ocean Shore Elementary has the lowest ELA result, 41%—8 points below the state—and the lowest math result, 40%, only 1 point above the state. These contrasts show why the ZIP-code averages do not describe every school equally well.

Recent changes are sharply different by school: Sunset Ridge Elementary rose 21 points in ELA, 9 in math and 28 in science from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, while Ocean Shore Elementary fell 19, 16 and 5 points, respectively. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile ranking also rose for Sunset Ridge, from the 38th percentile in 2023–2024 to the 68th in 2025–2026; Vallemar rose from the 79th to 85th, while Ocean Shore moved from the 79th to 54th. Student-teacher ratios range from 16.9 at Oceana to 23.9 at Vallemar, so the strongest results do not simply align with the lowest ratio. As context, Sunset Ridge reported 42% free/reduced lunch eligible in school year 2024–2025, compared with about 14%–19% at the other scored schools; this measure does not explain its score gains.
