Summary:

ZIP code 93638 has 17 schools: 11 elementary, three middle, and three high schools; 13 have all-grades test results for 2025–26, and all 17 have results for 2024–25. In 2025–26, the 13-school average was 29% in ELA, 19% in math, and 16% in science, compared with state results of 49%, 38%, and 36%. That puts local averages about 20 percentage points below the state in all three subjects—the most important area-wide finding.

The current leaders vary by subject: Matilda Torres High led in ELA at 56% and science at 37%, while Millview Elementary led in math at 30%. Torres’ ELA was 7 points above the state, but Millview’s math was still 8 points below it. At the low end, Mountain Vista High had 13% ELA and 1% math; George Washington Elementary had 5% science. An earlier standout was Sherman Thomas STEM Academy: in 2024–25, it scored 85% in ELA, 73% in math, and 81% in science, and SchoolDigger ranked it at the 97th percentile and gave it five stars.

Among the 13 schools with scores in both years, average ELA and math results each fell by about 1 point from 2024–25 to 2025–26, while science rose by about 1 point; state results rose in all three subjects, so the gaps widened by about 2 points in ELA and math and 3 in science. Millview improved in all three subjects, while Mountain Vista’s ELA fell by 9 points. School characteristics offer context, not a simple way to predict results: Sherman Thomas STEM enrolled 75 students and reported 36% free/reduced lunch eligible in the 2024–25 school year; Millview reported 72% directly certified for free meals that year. These measures are different and should not be compared as though they were the same rate; schools also serve different grades, and small enrollment can make results less stable.
