Summary:

Zip code 93541 has two schools serving kindergarten through grade 12: Lee Vining Elementary (kindergarten–grade 8) and Lee Vining High (grades 9–12), both in Eastern Sierra Unified. Together they enroll 136 students. The elementary school has 101 students and the high school 35. The clearest schoolwide achievement finding is that the elementary school’s 2025–26 results were below California’s in all three reported subjects: ELA was 46% versus 49%, math 27% versus 38%, and science 24% versus 36%. The high school’s test scores are suppressed, so its achievement cannot be compared with the elementary school’s.

Results at the elementary school vary sharply by grade, making grade-specific results more revealing than its schoolwide scores. Grade 6 ELA proficiency was 64%, 16 percentage points above the state; grade 7 was 64%, 13 points above. In contrast, grade 3 ELA was 7%, 37 points below the state, and grade 3 math was 7%, 40 points below. The high school stands out for attendance: chronic absenteeism was 7%, compared with 33% at the elementary school and 18% statewide. These figures point to different strengths, but the high school’s suppressed test scores do not show whether its lower absenteeism goes along with stronger academic results.

Achievement at the elementary school dropped from 2024–25 to 2025–26: ELA fell 14 percentage points, math 10, and science 18, while state scores rose in all three subjects. SchoolDigger’s elementary-school percentile also declined, from 74 in 2023–24 to 28 in 2025–26. Its high-school percentile moved from 82 in 2014–15 to 59 in 2022–23; those entries are years apart, not consecutive annual results. For additional context, 2024–25 student–teacher ratios were 17.5 at the elementary school and 7.3 at the high school. Both schools reported free/reduced lunch eligible figures for 2024–25: 47% at the elementary school and 40% at the high school. These are differences between schools, not explanations for their outcomes.
