Summary:

Zip code 93455 has 17 schools: seven elementary, three middle, two high schools and five alternative schools, with options spanning elementary through high school, including a K–12 school. In 2025–2026, the schools’ unweighted average proficiency was 41% in English language arts (ELA), 26% in mathematics and 28% in science, compared with statewide results of 49%, 38% and 36%. Five schools scored above the state in each subject. The clearest overall finding is the wide variation between schools, with mathematics showing the largest average gap from the state.

Orcutt Academy Charter led in ELA and science, at 63% and 55%, while Pine Grove Elementary led mathematics at 54%. At the other end, Delta High had the lowest all-grades results in all three subjects: 17% in ELA, 0% in mathematics and 3% in science. The top-to-bottom gaps were 46 percentage points in ELA, 54 in mathematics and 51 in science. Among middle schools, Orcutt Junior High and Lakeview Junior High exceeded state results in several same-grade comparisons, while Arellanes Junior High scored well below the state in those grades.

Recent changes are mixed: the group’s ELA average rose 2 points from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026 and its gap with the state narrowed, but its mathematics average fell 1 point and the science gap widened as state results rose faster. Orcutt Junior High improved in all three subjects; Joe Nightingale Elementary and Arellanes (Don Juan Bautista) Elementary declined in all three. SchoolDigger’s rankings also shifted: Arellanes Elementary fell 22 percentile points from 2023–2024 to 2025–2026, while Orcutt Junior High rose 8. School context varies too: student–teacher ratios range from 11 at Olive Grove Charter - Buellton to 26.7 at Joe Nightingale Elementary; all schools report free/reduced lunch eligible (FRL), sy 2024–2025, with values from 50% to 95%. These measures do not form a consistent pattern with test results.
