Summary:

ZIP code 93254 has two schools in Cuyama Joint Unified: Cuyama Elementary, serving kindergarten through grade 8 with 107 students, and Cuyama Valley High, serving grades 9–12 with 55 students. In 2025–2026, the high school’s all-grades results were higher in both reported subjects: 47% in English language arts (ELA) versus 23% at the elementary school, and 20% in math versus 16%. Both schools were below state results in every reported subject; the clearest area-wide concern is that math results were notably below the state at both schools.

Cuyama Valley High stands out for ELA: its 47% was just 3 percentage points below the state’s 49%, while its math result was 18 points below the state’s 38%. Cuyama Elementary was 26 points below the state in ELA and 22 points below in math; it is the only school with a reported all-grades science result, 14%, or 22 points below the state. The high school’s science result is suppressed. In grade-matched results, elementary 5th grade was closer to state levels than 3rd grade in both ELA (13 versus 23 points below) and math (8 versus 33 points below); the high school’s 11th-grade ELA and math were 11 and 12 points below state levels. SchoolDigger ranks the elementary school at the 17th percentile with 1 star and the high school at the 45th percentile with 2 stars. All-grades comparisons are descriptive, since the schools serve different grade spans.

Elementary results moved in mixed directions from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026: ELA fell 6 percentage points, math rose 2, and science fell 6. Its gap to the state widened by 7 points in ELA and 9 in science, but narrowed by 1 point in math. The schools also differ in attendance: 2025–2026 chronic absenteeism was 15% at the elementary school, below the state’s 18%, and 22% at the high school, above it. As context, both reported free/reduced lunch eligible for 2024–2025: 78% at the elementary school and 82% at the high school; all California students receive free school meals. The elementary school’s student–teacher ratio was 17.7, compared with 12.0 at the high school, but these figures do not explain the differences in results.
