Summary:

Schools in ZIP code 92004 include three schools in Borrego Springs Unified, serving kindergarten through grade 12 and 344 students across elementary, middle, and high school. In 2025–26, all three schools’ all-grades proficiency rates were below state rates in ELA, math, and science: the three-school averages were 34% in ELA versus 49% statewide, 24% in math versus 38%, and 22% in science versus 36%. The size of the gaps differs, and some grade-level results are stronger than the schoolwide picture. The most important finding is that no school leads across every subject, so a child’s school and grade can make a substantial difference.

Borrego Springs High stands out in all-grades ELA and math, with 38% proficiency in each; its ELA rate is 11 percentage points below the state, while math is less than 1 point below. Borrego Springs Middle leads science at 32%, 4 points below the state. Borrego Springs Elementary has the lowest all-grades math and science results, at 17% and 14%. There are important grade-specific exceptions: Elementary fourth-grade ELA is 50%, 4 points above its grade’s state rate, and High 11th-grade math is 38%, 6 points above the state. High also reports a 96% graduation rate versus 88% statewide.

Recent trends are mixed: the three-school average rose 5 percentage points in ELA and 7 in math from 2024–25 to 2025–26, while science fell 1 point; statewide, science rose 3 points. Middle improved in all three subjects, while Elementary declined in all three and High’s science result fell even as its ELA and math rose. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile rankings rose from 8th to 20th for Elementary and 16th to 28th for Middle, but fell from 65th to 52nd for High. In 2024–25, free/reduced lunch eligible shares were 82% at Elementary, 90% at Middle, and 94% at High; student-teacher ratios were 23.5, 15.8, and 12.3, respectively. These are useful context figures, not explanations for achievement; the schools also serve different grade spans and have relatively small enrollments.
