Summary:
ZIP code 91411 has five schools: two elementary schools, one middle school and two high schools, serving children from elementary through high school. In 2025–26, the schools’ unweighted average proficiency was 2 points below the state in ELA, 3 points below in math and 5 points below in science. The defining finding is the wide variation from school to school: the highest-to-lowest spread was 66 points in ELA, 70 in math and 61 in science.
Kester Avenue Elementary stands out at the top: it led the five schools in all three subjects, with 80% proficiency in ELA, 72% in math and 72% in science—31, 34 and 36 points above state, respectively. At the other end, Will Rogers Continuation had the lowest results in all three subjects, at 14% in ELA, 2% in math and 11% in science; it was 35, 36 and 25 points below state. Its chronic absenteeism was 89% and graduation rate 32%. The other schools have mixed profiles: Van Nuys Senior High was above state in ELA and nearly level in science, but below in math; Sylvan Park Elementary was above state in math but below in ELA and science; and Van Nuys Middle was below state in all three.
Group averages did not catch up with the state from 2024–25 to 2025–26: ELA was nearly unchanged, math fell by 1 point and science rose by 2, while the state’s science result rose by 3 points. SchoolDigger’s three-year rank percentiles rose for Kester (92nd to 94th), Sylvan Park (33rd to 57th) and Will Rogers (4th to 10th), and fell for Van Nuys Middle (40th to 35th) and Van Nuys Senior High (71st to 62nd). The elementary comparison is especially useful because both schools serve kindergarten through grade 5: Kester led Sylvan Park by 35 points in ELA, 23 in math and 54 in science, despite having a higher student–teacher ratio (24.6 versus 20.7). Their 2024–25 free/reduced lunch eligible figures were 47% at Kester and 97% at Sylvan Park; Will Rogers reported 66% directly certified for free meals that year and is marked as likely serving all students free meals through Community Eligibility. These measures provide context, not an explanation for results; schools’ different grade spans also limit some direct comparisons.
