Those results were 16 points and 17 points above the other three schools’ averages, respectively. Valerio Street Elementary led in science at 23%, though that was 13 points below the state. At the lower end, Columbus Avenue Elementary had the lowest ELA result at 29%, while Andres and Maria Cardenas Elementary had the lowest math and science results, at 22% and 11%. ELA and math averages improved from the prior year by 2 and 3 percentage points, and their gaps with the state narrowed by about 2 points each; science fell by 3 points as the state result rose, widening the gap by 6 points. Grade-level results add important distinctions: Hazeltine was above state results in grade 3 and 4 ELA and math, but below in grade 5; Columbus, despite its lowest all-grades ELA score, had the group’s highest grade 5 math result at 32%, still 4 points below the state. SchoolDigger’s rankings from 2023–2024 to 2025–2026 rose for Hazeltine (36th to 51st percentile) and Columbus (11th to 23rd), but fell for Valerio (28th to 25th) and Cardenas (34th to 17th). As context, the schools’ 2024–2025 free/reduced lunch eligible figures ranged from 94% at Hazeltine to 98% at Valerio; student-teacher ratios ranged from 19.4 to 22.8.
