ZIP code 90804 has six Long Beach Unified schools: three elementary schools, one middle school and two high schools. In 2025–2026, their unweighted average proficiency was 41% in ELA, 26% in math and 18% in science, compared with 49%, 38% and 36% statewide. Most importantly, the six-school averages trailed the state in every subject, and the gaps widened in all three subjects from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026—most sharply in science.
Different schools lead in different subjects, while the lowest results also vary. Jefferson Leadership Academies had the highest all-grades ELA and science results, at 50% and 27%; Willard Elementary had the lowest ELA, at 31%, and led math at 33%. Richard D. Browning High had the lowest all-grades math and science results, at 15% and 14%. Same-grade results add useful detail: Willard led grade 3 ELA and math, while Bryant Elementary led grade 4 and 5 ELA and grade 5 science. Among the high schools, Browning led grade 11 ELA, while Wilson High led grade 11 math and grade 12 science.
Recent changes show both gains and setbacks: Browning rose 4 points in ELA and 10 in science, while Bryant fell 12 points in ELA, 12 in math and 9 in science. SchoolDigger’s percentile ranking improved for Browning, from 26 to 37 between 2023–2024 and 2025–2026, but fell for Bryant from 54 to 32 and Willard from 41 to 29. Other measures offer context, not explanations: 2024–2025 free/reduced lunch eligible figures ranged from 71% at Bryant to 87% at Olivia Nieto Herrera Elementary. Student-teacher ratios ranged from 18.5 at Browning to 28.1 at Willard, which also had the highest chronic absenteeism, 38%. Wilson’s graduation rate was 93%, above the state’s 88%, despite chronic absenteeism of 30% and below-state math and science results.
