Summary:

High schools in ZIP code 90706 include three schools serving grades 7–12: Mayfair High, Bellflower High and Somerset High. Enrollment ranges from 104 students at Somerset to 2,422 at Mayfair. In 2025–26, the three-school averages were 37% proficient in ELA, 15% in math and 19% in science. The most important finding is that those averages conceal a sharp divide: the two larger schools scored much higher than Somerset in every all-grades subject.

Mayfair led in all three subjects, with 52% in ELA, 23% in math and 32% in science; Bellflower was close behind in ELA at 52% (52.4% versus Mayfair’s 51.6%), and scored 19% in math and 21% in science. Somerset was far lower, at 5% in ELA, 3% in math and 2% in science. Bellflower’s 11th-grade ELA result of 73% was the strongest grade-specific result, above Mayfair’s 67% and the state’s 57%. Graduation rates offer another point of comparison: Bellflower was at 96%, Mayfair at 95% and Somerset at 72%, against 88% statewide.

Recent trends favor Bellflower: from 2024–25 to 2025–26, it improved in all three subjects, while Mayfair’s ELA and math fell but science rose, and Somerset’s ELA and science fell. The three-school ELA average dropped 3 percentage points, widening its gap with the state from 10 to 13 points. SchoolDigger rankings also diverged: Mayfair fell from the 74th to the 61st percentile, Bellflower stayed at the 57th, and Somerset fell from the 16th to the 4th. In 2024–25, free/reduced lunch eligible figures were 70% at Mayfair, 84% at Bellflower and 88% at Somerset; Somerset’s student–teacher ratio that year was 8.6, compared with 19.9 at Bellflower and 22.1 at Mayfair. These are useful context, not explanations for school outcomes.
