Summary:

ZIP code 90606 has eight schools: five elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school, with 2025–26 proficiency results and 2024–25 results for comparison. The unweighted average school score was 48% in ELA, 41% in math and 33% in science, compared with state rates of 49%, 38% and 36%. These averages do not mean every school has the same profile, and all-grades results span different grade levels. The most important finding is the wide divide among elementary schools: Daniel Phelan Language Academy leads, while Aeolian Elementary is at the bottom.

Pioneer High has the ZIP code’s highest all-grades ELA score, 66%, and highest science score, 42%; both are above state rates of 49% and 36%. Daniel Phelan leads in math at 60%, compared with 38% statewide, and is the elementary leader in ELA and math in grades 3, 4 and 5. Aeolian’s all-grades scores are 31% in ELA, 27% in math and 21% in science—19, 11 and 15 points below state rates. Among middle schools, Katherine Edwards Mid School STEAM & Dual Immersion Academy leads all-grades ELA and math, while Los Nietos Middle leads science; Los Nietos also reverses the ELA pattern in grade 8, scoring 61% versus Katherine’s 53%. Pioneer’s graduation rate is 97%, above the state’s 88%, but its chronic absenteeism rate, 22%, is also above the state’s 18%.

Recent changes differ by subject and school: the average ELA score fell 3 points from 2024–25 to 2025–26, while math rose 2 points and science rose 5. Pioneer improved in all three subjects, by 4 points in ELA, 11 in math and 11 in science; Daniel Phelan declined in all three. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile rankings also moved in different directions: Katherine rose from the 64th to the 70th percentile, while Aeolian fell from the 49th to the 26th.
