Zip code 90232 has two elementary schools, [Linwood E. Howe Elementary](https://www.schooldigger.com/go/CA/schools/1026001120/school.aspx) and [La Ballona Elementary](https://www.schooldigger.com/go/CA/schools/1026001121/school.aspx), and both serve kindergarten through grade 5. Together, their 2025–2026 average proficiency was above the state average in English language arts (ELA), math, and science, but that area-wide picture hides a substantial difference between the schools. The most important finding is that [Linwood E. Howe Elementary](https://www.schooldigger.com/go/CA/schools/1026001120/school.aspx) led [La Ballona Elementary](https://www.schooldigger.com/go/CA/schools/1026001121/school.aspx) by 24 percentage points in ELA, 30 in math, and 10 in science.

Howe Elementary](https://www.schooldigger.com/go/CA/schools/1026001120/school.aspx) stands out as the academic leader: its 2025–2026 results were 74% in ELA, 71% in math, and 54% in science, all above state results. [La Ballona Elementary](https://www.schooldigger.com/go/CA/schools/1026001121/school.aspx) scored 50%, 41%, and 44%, respectively—also above the state in all three subjects, though its ELA result was just 1 point higher. Its all-grades results do not mean every grade was above the state: La Ballona was below the state in grade 4 ELA and math and grade 3 math. SchoolDigger’s 2025–2026 rankings also put Linwood higher, at 656th of 5,804 schools (89th percentile, 4 stars), compared with La Ballona at 2,237th (61st percentile, 3 stars).

Results changed unevenly over the two test years. La Ballona’s science proficiency rose 15 percentage points, from 29% to 44%, moving from below the state to above it; its ELA result fell 4 points, from 54% to 50%. Linwood’s results were steadier: ELA slipped by less than a point, while math rose 2 points and science 3. Linwood’s student–teacher ratio was 22.6, compared with 21.2 at La Ballona. For 2024–2025, free/reduced lunch eligible was reported as 28% at Linwood and 54% at La Ballona. These are differences between two schools, not evidence that any single background measure explains their results.
