Summary:

Schools in ZIP code 90037 include 14 schools—11 elementary schools and 3 high schools—with elementary grade spans ranging from K–2 to K–8 and no middle schools. In 2024–2025, the schools’ all-grades averages were below California’s by 10 percentage points in English language arts (ELA), 8 in math and 16 in science. Among the six schools with results in 2025–2026, averages were also below the state: by 15 points in ELA, 9 in math and 19 in science. The most important finding is that results vary widely across schools: 2024–2025 ELA proficiency ranged from 19% to 78%.

Alliance Patti And Peter Neuwirth Leadership Academy stood out in 2024–2025, with 78% proficient in ELA, 42% in math and 44% in science—29, 5 and 12 percentage points above state results, respectively. At the other end, Manual Arts Senior High had 10% math proficiency in 2025–2026, 28 points below the state; Fifty-Second Street Elementary had the lowest ELA result among the six schools with current-year data, at 23%. Stronger results appear in particular grades, too: West Vernon Avenue Elementary exceeded the state in 2025–2026 grade 5 ELA and math by 6 and 7 points.

Results improved on average from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026 among the six schools with comparable scores: ELA rose 3 percentage points, math 5 and science 4, though individual schools did not all improve. SchoolDigger rankings also rose from 28 to 46 for KIPP Vida Preparatory Academy between 2022–2023 and 2024–2025. Income measures offer context, not an explanation: in 2024–2025, West Vernon reported 67% directly certified for free meals and Fifty-Second Street 66%, while their all-grades math results were 43% and 20%. Comparisons are broad snapshots because grade spans differ, and year-to-year test comparisons are available for only six schools.
