Summary

Calimesa Elementary is a public K-5 school serving 511 students in the Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District, but it faces significant academic and attendance challenges that set it apart from most other schools in the area.

The school's academic performance is among the lowest in the state, with only about 22% of students proficient in English and 14% in math, which is dramatically lower than nearby schools like Inland Leaders Charter or Chapman Heights Elementary. Furthermore, over 33% of students are chronically absent, a rate more than double that of Wildwood Elementary and a major barrier to learning. This decline has been steep, with the school's statewide ranking falling sharply over the past several years while many neighboring schools have held steady or improved.

Calimesa Elementary shares some similar challenges with nearby Dunlap Elementary and Valley Elementary, including high economic need, but its performance and attendance issues are more severe. Interestingly, the school's per-student funding is comparable to better-performing schools, suggesting other factors are at play. For families, the stark contrast with high-performing local charter schools and the critical attendance issue are the most important takeaways when considering this school.
