Summary

Weaver Middle is a public school serving about 1,073 students in grades 6-8 in Merced, operating within the Weaver Union district, which serves a community with significant economic need.

The school faces challenges common to the area, including high rates of student poverty and chronic absenteeism, but shows resilience in its academic performance. While test scores in English, Math, and Science are below state averages, Weaver Middle generally performs in the middle range compared to nearby schools with similar student populations, such as Tenaya Middle and Wilson Middle. It is noteworthy that the school's academic results have remained relatively stable even as the number of students needing economic assistance has risen sharply in recent years. However, science scores are a particular area for improvement, and support for students in special education and English language learner programs has declined.

Compared to some schools, like Cesar E. Chavez Middle which has smaller classes and higher funding, Weaver's resources are more average. The school is also much larger than most others in the comparison. An interesting finding is that, unlike many schools, male students at Weaver have consistently outperformed female students in recent years. Overall, the school's performance within the stronger Weaver Union district context suggests it has foundational strengths to build upon as it works to address specific academic and attendance challenges.

Open Quote Presently, the principal at Weaver Middle School in Merced makes parents especially minority parents feel unwelcomed and disrespected. The principal was using offensive remarks, offensive tone and negative body language! And there is so much worse. The responsibilities of a professional principal are to respect parents and have opened communication with them. I am shocked and extremely disappointed with his comments and actions.
