Summary

Knolls Elementary is a K-6 public school serving 212 students in the Simi Valley Unified district, which has experienced a significant and steady decline in its statewide academic ranking over the past decade, now placing in the lower quarter of all California schools.

Academically, the school underperforms compared to both district and state averages in all core subjects, with mathematics being a particular area of concern where only about 16% of students are proficient. Interestingly, White Oak Elementary, less than a mile away in the same district, performs dramatically better despite serving a community with similar economic needs. Knolls also spends significantly more per student than most nearby schools in Simi Valley Unified, such as Santa Susana Elementary and Big Springs Elementary, yet has the lowest test scores.

The school maintains a favorable student-teacher ratio, but this has not translated to stronger academic outcomes. Performance in science has been inconsistent year-to-year, and chronic absenteeism, while improved, remains an issue. The contrast with high-performing charter schools in the neighboring Los Angeles Unified district, like Justice Street Academy Charter, shows that schools with similar student populations can achieve much higher results, indicating Knolls faces unique instructional or operational challenges.

Open Quote Knolls is definitely on an upswing. The teachers and principal are incredible. My son loves this school and is excelling. I believe a big problem is that when you put a lot of the responsibility on the parents to check in on aeres and support their kids where they need it, it doesn’t happen in most instances. I am lucky enough to be a stay at home mom and have the time to devote however, I do believe that as parents it is our responsibility to know what’s going on with our kids and help them when and where they may need it. I cannot express enough how much we love knolls. It’s a special little school. And let me also say, you can’t pay for these class sizes. Close Quote
