Summary

Washington Elementary serves 329 students in kindergarten through fifth grade in San Jose, within San Jose Unified. Its latest test scores improved in every tested subject, but remain substantially below district and state results: in 2025–26, 19% of students were proficient in English language arts (ELA), 18% in math and 12% in science. The main concern is that achievement remains low across all three subjects, not just one.

Compared with nearby same-district schools, math is Washington’s relative bright spot, while ELA is its weakest area against the district and state. Washington’s ELA, math and science proficiency rates were respectively 19%, 18% and 12%, compared with 51%, 42% and 41% in the district and 49%, 38% and 36% statewide. Among the seven other nearby schools with scores from the same year, averages were 34% in ELA, 26% in math and 24% in science; Washington was below those averages by 15, 9 and 12 percentage points. It ranked third-lowest of eight schools in ELA and fourth-lowest in math; in science, it tied with a nearby school and sat around the lower middle of the group.

The latest gains are encouraging, but they have not reversed the longer-term pattern: from 2022–23 to 2025–26, ELA proficiency edged down from 20% to 19%, math fell from 23% to 18%, and science was essentially flat at 11% to 12%. SchoolDigger ranked Washington at the 7th percentile with 0 stars in 2025–26, down from the 19th percentile in 2021–22. Its student-teacher ratio was 19.3 in 2024–25, among the lower ratios nearby, while 83% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible that year, the second-highest share among nearby schools with the same measure. SchoolDigger’s statewide rankings also show a notable change for English Language Learner Students: the group ranked at the 60th percentile in 2021–22, compared with 19th for the school overall, but fell to the 28th percentile by 2023–24, still above the school’s 7th-percentile overall result that year. For Special Education Students, the ranking fell from the 29th percentile in 2024–25, versus 3rd overall, to the 7th percentile in 2025–26, matching the school overall.
