Summary

Buena Vista/Horace Mann K-8 is a large public K-8 school in San Francisco, serving 586 students in a district where many schools face academic challenges.

Academic performance at the school is a significant concern, as it ranks in the bottom 10% of California elementary schools and has seen a steep decline over the past decade. Proficiency rates in English (25%), math (16%), and science (13%) are well below the San Francisco Unified district averages. The school struggles with chronic absenteeism, with nearly one-third of students missing too much school, which is higher than the state average. While the school serves a population with substantial economic needs, other nearby schools with similar or higher poverty rates, like Mission Preparatory, achieve much stronger academic results.

Despite receiving more funding per student ($27,121) than any other school in this comparison, outcomes have not improved. Performance varies greatly by grade, with middle school grades showing slightly better results in some subjects. The school's challenges are particularly pronounced for its economically disadvantaged students and English learners. For context, parents may wish to compare with higher-performing neighborhood schools like Harvey Milk Civil Rights Elementary and Dolores Huerta Elementary, or the charter school Thomas Edison Charter Academy, all of which serve similar grade levels in the same area.

Open Quote The school is in decline. They're not teaching with any rigor students can barely read and write. The school pretends to care about improving learning but they really don't because the only thing that has changed is that fewer middle class families attend the school. Without those families the school is doomed. We're leaving. Close Quote
