Summary

Los Robles-Ronald McNair Academy is a K-5 elementary school serving 276 students in East Palo Alto, operating within the Ravenswood City Elementary district, which ranks among the lowest in California.

Academic performance at the school is extremely low, with only about 6% of students proficient in English and Math, placing it at the very bottom of state rankings; this represents a significant decline from just a few years ago. The school faces a serious challenge with chronic absenteeism, with over 36% of students missing too much school, a rate nearly double the state average. Despite spending over $30,000 per student, which is relatively high, these resources have not translated into better academic outcomes, and performance is particularly low in upper grades, with 0% of 5th graders proficient in math in the latest data.

The situation at Los Robles highlights stark educational inequality within Silicon Valley. Schools just a mile or two away in the affluent Palo Alto Unified district, like Ohlone Elementary and Duveneck Elementary, have proficiency rates above 80%. Even within its own district, Costano Elementary performs better, and local charter schools like KIPP Valiant Community Prep and Aspire East Palo Alto Charter also outperform Los Robles while serving similar student populations, though they too lag far behind the area's highest-performing schools.

Open Quote Dual Language Immersion was established in Ravenswood City School District thirteen years ago, based on a model that has been in place in North America since the 1960’s. Dual Immersion is a unique educational model where children learn to think, read, write, and communicate naturally in two languages: in this case English and Spanish. Native Spanish and native English-speaking students study together, beginning in kindergarten, in this intensive K-8 program, to be biliterate, bilingual, & bicultural.

Why is it Beneficial?
• Students achieve dual language proficiency in English and Spanish while developing high-level academic skills.
• Students develop respect and appreciation for other cultures, and experience studying and playing in multicultural settings.
• Parents are encouraged to take an active role in their child’s long-term education
• Biliterate skills give students the options for careers requiring multilingual skills.
• Bilingualism helps develop strong thinking and reasoning skills useful for problem-solving in math and science.
What are the program goals?
• Bilingualism: Development of high levels of proficiency in the student’s first language and in a second language.
• Biliteracy: Perform at or above grade level in academic areas in both languages.
• Biculturalism: Demonstrate positive cross-cultural attitudes and behaviors, and high levels of self-esteem.
Los Robles Dual Language Immersion program is an open enrollment program however it requires a signed pre-referral form. The Dual Immersion program is open to all kindergarten and first grade students within the Ravenswood City School District, and outside of the Ravenswood City School District with an Intra District Transfer Approval.

Second through eighth grade students applying to enter the Spanish Dual Immersion program must first demonstrate grade appropriate level of Spanish and English Language Acquisition, and will be tested before granted admission. Special circumstances may determine if an English Only student is admitted after the first semester of first grade. Close Quote
