Summary

Olive Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 364 students in the Novato Unified School District, maintaining a solid mid-range statewide ranking while serving a student body where nearly half qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school performs close to or slightly above state averages, with particular strength in science where 40% of students are proficient. The school has made impressive progress in improving student attendance, with its chronic absenteeism rate now significantly better than the state average. However, performance has been volatile in recent years, and a recent increase in the number of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds coincides with a slight dip in its statewide ranking. Notable performance gaps exist between different student groups and across grade levels, especially in 3rd-grade mathematics.

When compared to nearby schools, Olive Elementary achieves its academic outcomes while serving a higher-need population than some higher-performing schools in the neighboring Miller Creek Elementary district, like Lucas Valley Elementary and Mary E. Silveira Elementary. It outperforms some schools with similar demographics, such as Lu Sutton Elementary, particularly in science. The school spends more per student than some higher-performing schools like Pleasant Valley Elementary and the Novato Charter, highlighting that spending alone does not determine outcomes.

Open Quote School is awful! Bullies are not handled appropriately, even after attempting to resolve an issue more than a few times, I’m finding myself reporting the same issues time and time again with no resolution. My son will NOT be returning to Olive! Close Quote
