Summary

Julie Korenstein Elementary is a public K-5 school serving 311 students in North Hollywood within the Los Angeles Unified district, where the vast majority of students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Academically, the school faces significant challenges, with student proficiency in English, math, and science consistently below district and state averages, placing it in the lower quartile of California elementary schools. However, the school shows some relative strengths, performing better for its Hispanic and low-income students compared to other schools statewide, and it has made impressive progress in reducing chronic student absences, now boasting a better attendance rate than both the district and state. Notably, the school spends more per student than most nearby Los Angeles Unified schools, including higher-performing ones like Bellingham Elementary.

Interesting comparisons emerge with nearby charter schools, such as ISANA Cardinal Academy and ISANA Palmati Academy, which achieve much higher test scores while serving similar student populations and spending less per child. Performance also varies widely between grade levels at Julie Korenstein, and science scores are a particular area of concern. While the school's ranking has been volatile year-to-year, its recent improvement in attendance is a positive sign for the school community.

Open Quote Don't judge a school by its rating on here. 1) the school is fairly new. 2) there are a lot of ESL students which by no means is represented by state tests. These kids are all brilliant in their own right! 3) they have a FABULOUS alternative special education program for kids who learn outside the mainstream. Korenstein is a jewel and I am grateful my son was transferred there! Close Quote
