Summary

Richland Avenue Elementary is a standout K-7 public school in the Los Angeles Unified district, serving about 280 students in the 90064 ZIP code and demonstrating a remarkable, decade-long climb to become one of California's top-ranked elementary schools.

The school differentiates itself with exceptional student engagement, evidenced by a chronic absenteeism rate of just 8.2%—less than half the district and state averages—and historically outstanding academic results for economically disadvantaged students. It achieves these top-tier results, ranking in the 94th percentile statewide, while operating efficiently compared to nearby schools; for instance, it significantly outperforms Nora Sterry Elementary and Walgrove Avenue Elementary, which have higher per-student spending but lower rankings. It also outperforms the nearby Citizens of the World Charter School Mar Vista, which has a much higher rate of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch.

Richland Avenue Elementary is part of a micro-cluster of high-performing LAUSD schools, including elite-rated neighbors like Overland Avenue Elementary and Clover Avenue Elementary, all sharing very low absenteeism. The school's sustained improvement and consistent high performance make it a notable success story within the broader district context.

Open Quote Not sure how frank I should be, but it has been our 3rd year. 1st year was okay, 2nd year we had a meeting and the principal can’t even pronounce my child’s name and got the appearance that they are out for the scores to look good instead of siding and helping the children, and this school year- we received no letter about the class, only to find out TK, K, and 1st grade is going to under one teacher because there was not enough enrollment. What is going on, I have no idea. I am almost about done. Close Quote

Open Quote Richland has great leadership with the current principal. Passionate, dedicated teachers as well as lots of enrichment for the students. The school is small, feels like a private school. Students and parents receive the attention they need and want! Close Quote
