Summary

Park Avenue Elementary is a K-6 public school serving 274 students in the Los Angeles Unified district in Cudahy, CA, which faces significant academic challenges and has a high rate of student absenteeism.

Academically, the school consistently ranks in the bottom quarter of California elementary schools, with proficiency rates in English, math, and science that are notably lower than nearby schools like Jaime Escalante Elementary and Teresa Hughes Elementary. A particular concern is the performance of 6th graders, where proficiency rates drop dramatically compared to other grades. Furthermore, Park Avenue has the highest chronic absenteeism rate (25.7%) among the local Los Angeles Unified schools, which is closely linked to lower academic achievement.

Interestingly, despite these challenges, Park Avenue receives more funding per student than all the comparison schools. The school has shown some recent improvement in reducing absenteeism from pandemic highs, and its effectiveness with its main student group is a relative strength. For improvement, the school could focus on boosting attendance, addressing the sharp drop in 6th-grade performance, and learning from nearby schools in similar communities that achieve better results, such as Bell Gardens Elementary in the Montebello Unified district.

Open Quote Just bad, I went to this school last year and oh my god. But I heard their making "improvements" by firing literally half of their staff and the new principal whom I won't mention has some of the kids upset. Close Quote
