Summary

Loren Miller Elementary is a public K-6 school serving 601 students in a high-poverty neighborhood of South Los Angeles within the Los Angeles Unified district, and it has historically struggled with low academic performance, currently ranking in the 24th percentile statewide.

While the school's overall test scores are lower than many nearby schools like Gil Garcetti Learning Academy and Sixty-First Street Elementary, it shows important signs of improvement, having climbed from the very bottom percentiles over the past decade. Interestingly, despite serving a student population with nearly identical levels of economic disadvantage, academic results vary widely among these neighboring schools, indicating that factors beyond poverty influence outcomes. Loren Miller spends a mid-range amount per student compared to peers, but this hasn't yet translated to superior academic results.

The school has notable strengths, including dramatic recent improvement for English Language Learners and special education students, and a surprisingly strong 3rd grade math score. However, it faces significant challenges with chronic absenteeism and a severe gap in science proficiency. Compared to the charter school KIPP Empower Academy, which spends less per student, Loren Miller's academic performance is lower, raising questions about resource efficiency. The overall picture is of a school in a very challenging context that is making slow but steady progress in specific areas.

Open Quote I used to go here as a young one and it was pretty bad. The lunch sucked. I was bullied a lot. Some of the supervisors watched me get beat up once. The students there are the worst. There was a lock down because the school had a poor security system. But some of the teachers like Mrs. Arguello really made an impact on me. Close Quote
