Summary

Buchanan Street Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 278 students in the Los Angeles Unified district, located in the 90042 ZIP code, which has shown remarkable academic improvement in recent years.

The school's most striking feature is its rapid progress, climbing from a 1-star to a 3-star rating and improving its statewide ranking by 30 percentile points in just two years, a gain that outpaces most nearby schools like Aldama Elementary and Monte Vista Street Elementary. It performs particularly well in science, exceeding both district and state averages, and maintains a lower student-teacher ratio than several peers, allowing for more individual attention. Furthermore, the school has made significant strides in improving student attendance, which is closely linked to its academic gains.

While Buchanan is a standout example of improvement, the data shows areas for continued focus, such as supporting fifth-grade math proficiency and special education students. Compared to higher-performing neighbors like Mt. Washington Elementary and Eagle Rock Elementary, Buchanan serves a community with greater economic need, yet it outperforms several schools with similar profiles, such as Yorkdale Elementary and Annandale Elementary, demonstrating that strong growth is achievable.

Open Quote Just to give parents an idea ...my son which is now sixth grader in this school has been doing worst than ever... the years prior he struggled but teachers over all were good with him and he would pull thru and would actually learn because of the support he had from the teachers and me.... this year has gone sooo bad I'm in tears because he's not learning anything the teacher and principle don't care they just want to get thru day and go they dont care if they learn anything......I have complained about changing him but there is no room principle did not budge at all ....(one detail he is in combo class which means one teacher for 2 grades 5th and 6th graders) nobody is learning nothing this year well at least not in this class with that teacher ...if he does pass im afraid he will go to middle school without knowing sixth grades basics.... I really don't recommend this school I am still looking for other ways to help him ....thinking of changing schools hope its not to late in the year. Close Quote
