Summary

Avalon K-12 is an alternative school serving 443 students in kindergarten through 12th grade in Avalon, California, and is part of Long Beach Unified. The most urgent concern is chronic absenteeism: in 2025–26, 44% of students were chronically absent, compared with 25% in the district and 18% statewide—gaps of 19 and 26 percentage points, respectively. The rate was about 2.4 times the state rate.

Test proficiency was below both district and state results in every tested subject in 2025–26: Avalon had 20% proficiency in English, 14% in math, and 8% in science, versus 51%, 40%, and 31% in the district and 49%, 38%, and 36% statewide. Science was closest to the district, while math had the lowest proficiency; science was also slightly closer to the state than English. Graduation is a relative bright spot: Avalon’s rate was 89%, 1 point above the state’s 88% but 2 points below the district’s 91%. Results have generally weakened over time: from 2022–23 to 2025–26, proficiency fell 6 percentage points in English, 5 in math, and 7 in science, while state proficiency rose in all three subjects. English and math improved modestly in the latest year, but science fell another 4 points. Chronic absenteeism is also up 11 points from its 2023–24 low, despite being 5 points below its 2021–22 rate. Graduation rose 7 points from 2023–24 but remains 8 points below Avalon’s 2021–22 rate.
