Summary

Clarence Ruth Elementary is a public K-6 school serving 495 students in the Lompoc Unified district, located in a high-need community where over 84% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school faces significant challenges, with proficiency rates in English (25%) and math (13%) that are substantially lower than the state average and dramatically lower than nearby schools like Crestview Elementary (52% English, 39% math) and Buena Vista Elementary (51% English, 38% math). Science proficiency is a particular concern at just 7.8%. The school's statewide ranking has declined over the past decade but appears to have stabilized in recent years at a low level.

Interestingly, Clarence Ruth spends more per student ($16,440) than some higher-performing schools in the district, suggesting challenges with how resources are used. Its chronic absenteeism rate (21%) is also lower than some neighboring schools with similar demographics, like La Honda STEAM Academy. The school is part of a cluster of high-poverty, low-performing schools in the area, indicating broader community challenges, though comparisons show that school-level practices can make a difference even with similar student populations.

Open Quote The principal is completely unconcerned with teachers verbally abusing the students. A teacher called my son "ugly" and the principal shrugged it off, not even returning my phone call. My son has had issues all year because his teacher does not speak clear English and he cannot understand her when she gives instructions. He is not the only student with this problem yet no one will do anything to help these students. Close Quote
