Summary

Tom Hawkins Elementary is a K-8 public school serving 728 students in Tracy, CA, operating as a middle-performing school within the generally strong Jefferson Elementary district.

Academically, the school performs at or slightly above state averages but consistently below the average for its own district in core subjects like English and math; notably, math proficiency drops significantly in 5th grade. The school has a key strength in its successful program for English Language Learners, which has historically received high state rankings. However, the student population has seen a rapid increase in economic need over the past two years, and the school's statewide ranking has declined slightly during this period of demographic change.

Interesting comparisons within the district reveal stark differences: while Tom Hawkins performs near state averages, nearby Corral Hollow Elementary dramatically outperforms it, and Anthony C. Traina Elementary performs slightly below. Tom Hawkins also spends more per student than some of these district peers. When compared to schools in the neighboring Tracy Joint Unified district, such as Central Elementary or George Kelly Elementary, Tom Hawkins generally shows stronger outcomes, highlighting the advantage of being in the Jefferson district.

Open Quote It is really sad to see our beloved Tom Hawkins school fall apart. What was once a great school that parents could look up to with confidence has turned to a below average school, which leaves parents feeling very sad. Hawkins is now ranked amongst the lowest schools in Tracy now. Six years ago it was a 7 or 8 and then it dropped steadily and now is ranked 5 according to greatschools.org. And if you go to the California Board of education website, you can see the scores have dropped so below state standard. But this is no surprise as some of us parents feel the school was headed in a downward spiral for the last five years due to the current principal and her incompetence and unethical behavior. The bottom line: the school should be heading in a positive direction, not down.
