Fern Drive Elementary

Summary:

Fern Drive Elementary is a public elementary school in Fullerton, California, serving 413 students from kindergarten to 6th grade. The school is part of the Fullerton Elementary District, which is ranked 508 out of 1,560 districts in the state.

Fern Drive Elementary faces some academic challenges, with its overall performance in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science generally lower than the district and state averages. The school has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 38.95% to 55.21%. Additionally, Fern Drive Elementary has experienced higher chronic absenteeism rates compared to the state average, which may be a contributing factor to its lower academic performance. In contrast, nearby high-performing schools like Laguna Road Elementary and Robert C. Fisler Elementary consistently rank among the top elementary schools in California.

However, Fern Drive Elementary's Hispanic and English Language Learner student subgroups have performed relatively well, ranking in the top 30-40% of California elementary schools in these categories. To address the school's challenges, the administration could consider implementing targeted interventions and support programs, investigating the root causes of the higher chronic absenteeism rate, and collaborating with the district and nearby high-performing schools to learn from their successful strategies.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We love Fern Drive. Dr Julie Brandon is an excellent leader- she is kind, approachable and has a lot of dynamic ideas that the kids seem to love. I understand that Fern has had a few bad reviews a while ago, and lower test scores, but I truly believe that Dr Bandon will turn this around. I am excited to see this progress unfold. My daughter loves her teacher, and generally loves going to school everyday! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
