Summary

Wawona K-8 serves 688 students in kindergarten through eighth grade in Fresno, within Fresno Unified. Its strongest result is sixth-grade English language arts (ELA), but all-grades ELA, math and science scores remain below district and state results. The clearest concern is the sharp ELA drop after sixth grade: 70% of sixth graders were proficient, compared with 26% in seventh grade and 23% in eighth.

Sixth-grade ELA is a standout: Wawona’s 70% was above the state’s 48% and the district’s 42%, and was the highest among nearby schools with results, ahead of Bullard Talent at 60%. Schoolwide, however, Wawona’s 2025–2026 results were 32% in ELA, 23% in math and 19% in science, versus 40%, 29% and 24% in the district, and 49%, 38% and 36% statewide. Science was a relative bright spot nearby: Wawona ranked fourth among eight nearby schools with reported science scores. Most nearby schools serve K–6, so their all-grades results do not have the same grade mix as Wawona’s.

Results and attendance have improved over time: from 2022–2023 to 2025–2026, ELA rose 8 percentage points and math 10, while science increased 4 points but fell further behind the state. Chronic absenteeism dropped from 45% in 2021–2022 to 23% in 2025–2026, though the latest rate remained above the state’s 18%. SchoolDigger’s overall standing climbed from the 12th percentile and one star in 2021–2022 to the 61st percentile and three stars in 2025–2026. Its statewide rankings for Hispanic students (77th percentile) and low socioeconomic status students (75th percentile) were notably above its overall percentile. As context, 72% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible in 2024–2025, compared with a 76% nearby-school average, and the student-teacher ratio was 18.4.
