Summary

O’Day Short Elementary is a K–5 public school in Fontana, California, serving 455 students in the Fontana Unified area. In the 2025–26 results, students’ proficiency was below state and district levels in English language arts (ELA), math, and science. The most important finding is that achievement is low across all three subjects, with O’Day last in ELA among the ten nearby schools with comparable results.

Results have risen since 2022–23, but O’Day has not caught up: ELA increased by 2 points, math by 3, and science by 4, while the gaps with state results widened in all three subjects. The latest year was mixed: ELA fell by 5 points, while math rose by 1 and science by 5. Chronic absenteeism also improved, dropping from 56% in 2021–22 to 25% in 2025–26, but remained above the district’s 20% and the state’s 18%. The 2024–25 free/reduced lunch eligible share was 92%, compared with an 87% average at nearby schools; this is context, not an explanation of achievement. O’Day’s 2024–25 student-teacher ratio was 19.4, below the nearby average of 21.1. One subgroup result stands out: SchoolDigger ranked English Language Learner Students at the 24th percentile in 2023–24, compared with O’Day’s overall 8th percentile that year, a relative bright spot rather than a current-year result.
