Terra Vista Elementary

Summary:

Terra Vista Elementary is a public elementary school in Rancho Cucamonga, California, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Etiwanda Elementary School District. The school has a diverse student population and consistently ranks among the top elementary schools in the state, with impressive academic performance and support for traditionally underserved student groups.

Terra Vista Elementary's academic performance is exceptional, with students scoring significantly higher than state and district averages on Smarter Balanced Assessments in both English Language Arts and Mathematics. In the 2022-2023 school year, the school's proficiency rates were 67.68% in ELA and 65.62% in Math, compared to the state averages of 46.66% and 34.62%. The school's performance is particularly strong for African American, Hispanic, and English Language Learner students, ranking among the top schools in California for these subgroups. When compared to nearby schools, such as Caryn Elementary, Grapeland Elementary, and Perdew Elementary within the Etiwanda Elementary School District, as well as Banyan Elementary and Deer Canyon Elementary in the Alta Loma Elementary District, Terra Vista Elementary's academic performance is notably stronger.

However, the school has seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 3.5% in 2017-2018 to 16.5% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the district and state averages. Additionally, the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch has increased from 35.22% in 2020-2021 to 57.1% in 2022-2023, indicating a growing population of economically disadvantaged students. While Terra Vista Elementary's overall academic performance remains impressive, the school should investigate and address the increase in chronic absenteeism to ensure all students have the opportunity to fully benefit from the educational opportunities available.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Terra Vista is a wonderful school! There are so many programs that keep the kids excited about going to school. I really love that they have high academic standards and many programs centered around the arts. The kids learn about a new artist every month and they create their own art. My son is in the band program and my daughter performs in Chorus every year. They also teach kids how to persevere and never give up. The teachers really care about the kids and the office staff is always friendly. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
