Summary

George Washington Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 440 students in the Burbank Unified district, known for its diverse community and historically strong performance, though recent data shows a notable shift.

The school has recently seen a significant drop in its statewide ranking, falling from the 71st to the 57th percentile in one year, which is the most dramatic decline among nearby Burbank schools like Thomas Jefferson Elementary and Theodore Roosevelt Elementary. Performance varies widely between student groups and grade levels; for instance, its programs for English Learners are exceptionally strong, but test scores for third graders are particularly low, and the performance of students in special education has fallen sharply. On a positive note, the school has made impressive progress in reducing chronic student absenteeism, bringing it below both district and state averages.

While George Washington serves a higher percentage of economically disadvantaged students than other schools in Burbank Unified, other district schools with similar demographics, such as Providencia Elementary, maintain higher rankings, suggesting factors specific to the school are influencing results. Overall, the school demonstrates clear strengths in certain areas but faces urgent challenges in addressing its declining academic trajectory and supporting specific student subgroups and grade levels.

Open Quote Very poor emphasis on special education for the special needs kids. There police were called multiple times for "a b u s e" which is not an exaggeration(go to the police station and see for yourself) The kids are terrified of the special needs teachers. Special needs teachers always "lose" the kids during field trips too, BEWARE! Close Quote
