Fremont Elementary

Summary:

Fremont Elementary is a public elementary school in Antioch, California, serving 433 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school faces significant challenges, with consistently low academic performance, high rates of chronic absenteeism, and a student population that is predominantly Hispanic and African American from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Fremont Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 5% of California elementary schools, with proficiency rates on standardized tests that are often less than half of the Antioch Unified School District and state averages. The school has a much higher percentage of Hispanic (64.43%) and African American (21.94%) students compared to nearby schools, which range from 46.97% to 60.47% Hispanic and 7.14% to 21.94% African American. Fremont Elementary also has an extremely high chronic absenteeism rate, ranging from 25.1% to 54.4%, significantly higher than the 30.8% to 48.9% range of nearby schools.

The challenges faced by Fremont Elementary are further compounded by its high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 76.67% to 89.98%, compared to 51.54% to 81.47% at nearby schools. This suggests that the school serves a community with significant socioeconomic challenges, which may impact student learning and achievement. Addressing the persistent academic, demographic, and socioeconomic issues at Fremont Elementary will likely require a comprehensive, targeted approach by the school and Antioch Unified School District.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Given the transient nature of the students and the disadvantages students have before walking through the door (including lack of parent support either through inability or incapacity), teachers at Fremont have done an amazing job. Students are advancing in spite of decreased budget, programs, parent involvement etc. Maybe if programs were funded and teachers did not have to fund their own classrooms and work 12+ hours daily, more progress could be made. Maybe those reviewing and commenting on SchoolDigger should do something about that and put their efforts to a good, logical use. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
