Summary

Sycamore Creek Community Charter is a small, K-8 charter school serving 158 students in Huntington Beach, operating within its own Sycamore Creek Community Charter District.

Academically, the school faces significant challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom quartile of California schools, with a particular struggle in mathematics where proficiency is far below the state average and nearby schools like Courreges (Roch) Elementary and Tamura (Hisamatsu) Elementary. Performance varies dramatically by grade, with 8th graders excelling in English Language Arts, while younger grades, especially 5th grade in math, show severe proficiency gaps. Despite these academic results, the school maintains a notable strength in student attendance, with chronic absenteeism rates lower than both the state average and several neighboring schools with similar student populations, such as Oak View Elementary.

Compared to other local schools, Sycamore Creek's performance is similar to the lowest-performing traditional public schools in the area rather than exceeding them, challenging common assumptions about charter school outcomes. It spends less per student than some comparable schools while maintaining a slightly lower student-to-teacher ratio. For improvement, the school could focus urgently on its mathematics program for younger grades and investigate the successful strategies used with its 8th-grade students, while also looking to schools like Hope View Elementary that achieve stronger academic results with a somewhat similar student demographic.

Open Quote As a parent having a Kindergarten here at Sycamore Creek I have been very pleased with our experience so far. It offers a lot of great enrichment through stories and hands on activities for the children. It is NOT your basic traditional school with kids sitting at desk quietly working on worksheets. This school offers a lot of body movements and times of concentration. Their major focus is offering age appropriate activities and learning materials for the students. I appreciate this to many schools expect to much of these little ones. They have a ton events and the parent involvement is high, which makes our events that much more magical. The school is TK-8th and after attending their parent education night I am even more excited for my son to continue his journey through. This school offers a unique kenestic skill learning. I love the fact that the teachers follow them through 1-8th the teachers better understand your child rather than changing every year. I highly recommend we love Close Quote
